The Deep Impact Flyby Spacecraft Radio Subsystem was used primarily for communications, commanding, tracking, and data transfer, but the telemetry also has the potential to be used to determine very small accelerations due to the mass of the comet body or dust and gas drag during the flyby. The radio system operates in X-band (8.000 MHz) via a 1 meter diameter Cassegrain dish antenna mounted on a 2-axis gimbal or through a fixed low-gain antenna and two 20 W TWTA power amplifiers. Ground reception is at Deep Space Network 34 m and 70 m receiving stations.
