The Galileo Energetic Particle Investigation (EPI) had as its primary goal to study the energetic particle population in the Jovian magnetosphere from a distance of 5 Jovian radii down to the top of Jupiter's atmosphere. To achieve this, the EPI made measurements of four different species of particles (electrons, protons, alpha particles, and Z > 2 ions) in eight different channels (three each electron and proton, one each alphas and heavy ions).
